In Memory of Dr. Brecken Chinn (1969-2019)

Brecken-sml

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our founder and leader, Dr. Brecken Chinn, on October 31 in Shenzhen, China. We do not currently have details to share but we  understand that she passed peacefully.

Brecken founded HandReach in 2004 and was the shining light that attracted a wide range of volunteers, board members, and supporters to HandReach. She was the driving force behind the Beat Brigade drum circles, fashion shows, community events, and gatherings. Her “Starfish Model” for pediatric burn care engendered a comprehensive treatment approach combining surgical, orthopedic, nursing, rehabilitation, and psychosocial disciplines for improved recovery outcomes. Not surprisingly, her vision and impact reached well beyond U.S. borders as she strove to bring HandReach aid to children not only in China, but also in Africa, Pakistan, and Guyana.

HandReach continues its mission to execute on her vision. Brecken gathered a dedicated and talented volunteer board of directors to manage the day-to-day logistics and business of supporting our injured children, and we are honored to continue implementing her dream of bringing critical trauma care to children least able to access it.

“When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts” (poet Mary Baker Eddy). Her sparkling laugh and genuine touch may no longer brighten our days, but the Angel named Brecken will always create love in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her, and she will carry the HandReach team onward for the children, for their families, and for her legacy.

We invite you to visit her Facebook page to experience the incredible outpouring of love and condolences. We have also set up a special Brecken Chinn Memorial Fund should you wish to donate to HandReach in her memory.

Brecken was our inspirational, committed, and loving leader who was good to the core. God rest her soul.
